Every year at Christmas Donald hangs icicle lights on our deck. We always leave them up for a while afterward, just because it's nice. He had full intentions of taking them down today, but was too busy cleaning up the yard. I didn't think about it and went to put some food out for the squirrels, and when I turned around I couldn't help but smile.

Today was yard fire day! Living so close to the woods means we get a lot of debris that falls from trees during storms. Donald and I spent a few hours picking up sticks and fallen trees, breaking them into small pieces and throwing them in the fire. Sounds like work, but it's really fun!

However, it looks like the bread took care of the slashes on its own. While the bread still tasted good, it was a little dough-y. I guarantee you I'll never forget to put the slashes again.

Tonight's supper, beans and rice. This is one of those meals that was born out of trying to find a balance between my mostly vegetarian, occasionally eats chicken and turkey ways, and Donald's meat eating ways. Super simple meal with onions, garlic, turkey kielbasa, red beans and rice. As plain and simple as it is, it has become one of our favorites, and one that the girls request when they come home.

They have pretty awesome fish tacos!

Pine cones. I never really thought much about them, other than they hurt like the dickens when you step on them in barefeet. But when Dottie played LaCrosse in high school we were at one of her tournaments and I was talking with another player's mother. She was from somewhere up north where they don't have pine trees. (I apologize, but I can't remember the exact location.) She talked about how different things are in the south, one of them being pine trees. She said when she moved here she thought pine cones were beautiful, like wooden flowers. She said she would go outdoors and gather them up and make arrangements to decorate her home. I love it when things are put into a different perspective for me.

I hardly ever take time to read anymore. You see, I have this problem that when I read, I become completely and totally absorbed in the book. It's almost as if once I start a book I have to finish it in one sitting. I've been known to read all night so I can read a book from beginning to end. The last time I spent time reading, I realized I would get mad when my family would interrupt me for some random question like, "What are we having for dinner?" All of these things are reasons I gave it up. But, recently I heard an NPR segment about a series of childrens' books that so intrigued me I went and bought the first book. The series is The 39 Clues. What's unique about these books is they are mysteries and have an online component. So you read the books, then you go online and play the games to help solve the mystery. Right up my alley! As you can see from the photo, Thug the pug is helping me read.

Those of you that know me know that I have a love affair with bread. Not just any bread, but really good artisan bread. This could be the reason I can't seem to drop any more weight. For Christmas this year, Liz gave me a book entitled "Healthy Bread in Five Minutes a Day" and I have been anxious to try it out. Yesterday was the perfect day to try my hand at bread making. The technique is a bit unusual in that you make the dough, and then store it in the refrigerator and pull off a chunk each day. The dough can last up to 14 days in the fridge. Anyway, here you can see the first loaf, which is whole wheat. For the record, it is delicious! Even Donald, who does not like whole wheat products, thought it was awesome.
