My friend Rachel has a photo collection called 'Round the House. I thought that could be a good idea for me, too, especially on days when I don't have any good ideas for a photo. What you see here is part of our shelf collection in the den. The shoe is made of milk glass, and came from my grandmother when she died. I believe it originally came from her sister, my Aunt Ola. In the picture, my mother is on the right and I think she was about 1 in this picture. On the left is her only sibling, my Uncle Charlie, and he would have been about 3. Tomorrow we are going to celebrate his 81st birthday!

I'm sorry for the similarity between yesterday's photo and today's. But I've been noticing little patches of Black Eyed Susans all along my ride to work, and just had to stop this morning and take some pictures. Like I eluded to yesterday, I don't often "stop to smell the roses". Today I took the opportunity, and it was quite liberating.

I am over the pity party I had for myself yesterday.

I don't often take time to walk around school grounds with the camera, but I did today. I always forget how much fun that is, just looking to see what you can see. Today I saw these pretty yellow flowers. I 'm sure they're weeds, but to me they just look happy.

I feel like I'm an easy-going person. I don't think I'm hard to get along with, and I think most people like me. For these reasons, I think it's fairly easy for people to take advantage of me. For the second time in less than a week (at two different schools), when I've gotten to work, I can't even get to my work area because others have put their stuff there. What you can't see in this picture is the pile of boxes stacked up just on the other side of the cart. My solution? I moved to the server room.

There's no doubt I have a sweet tooth. When I saw this recipe for Knock You Naked Brownies from The Pioneer Woman, I had to give it a try. The result? The brownies are good, but not anywhere near as good as the name suggests. They're almost too sweet, even for me. I much prefer this recipe for German Chocolate Bars, which is similar but so much better.

Patrick made his first journey today, the one from the hospital to home. Donald and I got to help with the transition from, and even got to babysit while Mommy got a well deserved nap. Without question, this baby has rocked my world.

"Granddaddy tells the funniest jokes I've ever heard!"

(I'm slightly cheating today. I actually took this picture last night, and not today. But, I went back to work today, and it just felt funny to take a picture of something random when I had such a great picture of Donald and Patrick.)

There is nothing quite so sweet as a mother and her baby. Patrick was just about an hour old at this point, and he is still trying to figure out if he likes being out of the womb or not.

Yesterday was a very, very long day. But in a good way! Dottie went into labor around midnight on the 18th, we got the call at 5:12 a.m. and couldn't wait to get to Fayetteville to meet our new grandson. Luckily we waited because they wound up sending her home. She went back to the hospital at 2:30 in the afternoon and that's when they called us. Of course we jumped in the car certain we would have a baby very soon! As a matter of fact, I was afraid I would miss it. I shouldn't have worried. This picture of the baby monitor was taken around 8.

I told you recently about getting a guitar for my birthday, and about my plans to take lessons. I don't remember if I told you what a phenomenal guitar player my father in law was. Back in the 60s and 70s he played in a band with gigs all over Wilmington. Donald took lessons as a teenager, and this is the book he used, which he got from his father. The copyright date on this book is 1937. We can only wonder if this is the book Mr. Bryan used to teach himself to play.

Today would have been Mr. Bryan's 84th birthday. For Donald growing up, every Saturday night, the family would grill out. It was almost always steak. To celebrate, Donald and I wanted to grill out tonight. He's having steak, and I'm having chicken. We thought it would be fun to use the charcoal grill instead of the gas grill, since that's what his dad preferred. Imagine our surprise when we took the cover off the charcoal grill and saw the wasp nest, which decided for us; we're going to use gas tonight.

I'm in love with Trader Joe's. They sell pizza dough for $1.09. It made two pizzas for Donald and me. We figured out the total cost, and including beverages, it was less than $10 for both of us. What a deal.

I think most Americans are reflecting on 9/11/2001 today. Like everyone else, I remember exactly where I was, what I was doing, and who I was with. I also remember the numbness I felt inside. Once the initial shock wore off, I felt a surge of patriotism. My grandmother gave me this pin when I was a little girl. I'm not exactly sure of the year, but I know it was before I was 10, because that's how old I was when she died. I dug it out of my jewelry box and wore it proudly for a long time after 9/11. I thought it only fitting to wear it again today.

In keeping with the mushroom theme, here are more that are in our backyard. It reminds of a poem I memorized as a child, "The Elf and the Dormouse". If you've never heard it, I've included a link below. Enjoy!

September. What a great month this is! In the Mills family, we have 7 birthdays between August 26 and September 30. When I married Donald, we added another September birthday, his dad. And NOW, we're patiently waiting on a new addition to birthday season, our first grand child. I look at the calendar and wonder which of these days will it be? Every day, I think today is the day. I just can't wait to meet him!

What a weird weather day! The remnants of Tropical Storm Lee visited us today. We would go from bright sunshine to pouring rain in about a half second. These clouds rolled in at dismissal time. And yes, it rained on the children leaving school.

Today is two picture day! I found this sign very, very funny. And yet oddly comforting.

Donald and I went out to the beach early this morning, partly to beat the crowd and partly to beat the heat. I took the camera along, just in case I spotted something worthy of shooting. I saw this small X in the sand, and wondered if I should dig for buried treasure.

We had a little mishap with the AC unit in Wilmington. Back when it was so hot, the unit sweated, and the water trickled slowly into the ceiling. We realized it one weekend, and tried to prevent the inevitable by poking holes in the drywall and relieving the pressure. It worked for a while, but eventually, it all came tumbling down.

The birthday weekend has begun! There's a restaurant close to our house that sends you a coupon every year on your birthday. We decided to cash in on it tonight. I had penne pasta with artichokes and spinach, and Donald had white pizza.
