Today we are celebrating my sister's birthday! Her favorite restaurant is Bahama Breeze, so that's where we went. We never miss an opportunity to get a group photo when we're all together. That gets harder and harder to do once children turn into adults.

When Thug woke up this morning, he clearly didn't feel well. We've thought for a while that his back legs and hips were bothering him. Today, his movements were slow and seemed painful. I sat on the floor with him and he was just about dead weight in my arms. I had an old prescription pain medication for him that was expired but I gave it to him anyway. All day long I worried and wondered what I would find when I got home. Looks like the pain meds worked!

Around 2:00 this morning, I realized I hadn't uploaded a photo of the day. I suppose it's because teachers came back yesterday, and I was 100% exhausted when I got home. I did not take any pictures yesterday, so here is another one from our beach trip on Sunday. I don't know why, but I love to take pictures of seagulls almost as much as I love to take pictures of Patrick.

Work this summer has been horrendous. I have been working ridiculously long hours, coupled with the manual labor of moving computers around. I had been having some pain in my hip, that I ignored because I just figured I wasn't getting enough exercise. When I went for my cholesterol appointment this week, I mentioned the hip pain. She took me seriously and did a pretty thorough exam. As it turns out, the pain was not due to lack of exercise, and it was not just in my head, I have bursitis. After two doses of medication, I remember what it feels like to not be in pain.

I think I've mentioned that I joined a CSA this year. My produce is delivered on Thursday, and each Thursday I look forward to coming home and seeing what is in my box. Here is a sample of what I got this week. What you don't see are blueberries, cherry tomatoes and cantaloupe. It has been a good way to get fresh produce and we've tried things we wouldn't have otherwise.

I am finally getting around to trying something I've wanted to do for a while; make my own vanilla extract. There's a spice store not too far from home that sells vanilla beans, so I decided it's now or never. A pint of cheap vodka, six vanilla beans and a little time. We'll see how it turns out. And by the way, I think this shop is a chain, so if you've got a Savory Spice Shop anywhere close, you should check it out. It's a very cool store.

Every now and then, when the weather is nice, Donald likes to set the camper up in the driveway. It has been nice enough to sit outside under the canopy, so we decided to take our picture. I'm not particularly fond of how I look. As a matter of fact, this picture is enough incentive for me to start counting calories again.

I think you have to be an elementary school teacher to understand the humor in this photo. I'll do my best to explain. I was working in a classroom today in our year round school. This teacher had the students fill out this form so she could get to know them, and they could get to know each other. Do you see the question, "My pets are ___?". All the other students listed what pets they own, but this child answered "small". I hope whoever this is doesn't lose the different way of looking at the world.

Thug hates thunderstorms. Today, one came up out of nowhere and it just so happened that it happened while Donald was taking him out for his afternoon walk. It was one of those bright lightening flashes immediately followed by loud thunder. Thug was scared out of his wits, and it took him a long time to get over it. When I got home from work, this is what he wanted to do. He stayed this way for about 10 minutes. I guess sometimes even a little dog needs to be comforted.
