If you've known me for any length of time, you know that I had a very special relationship with my grandmother, Maw. Yesterday would have been her 99th birthday, and I thought about her all day. It was a sad, sad day when she died, and this is a peace lily someone gave us in memory of her. Today, when I went out on the deck, I was delighted to see it blooming!

I am still going a little egg crazy over here. My friend at school brought me more fresh eggs, and tonight guess what we're having for supper? One thing I've learned about these eggs is that you're not supposed to wash them until you're ready to eat them. Apparently there is an enzyme that keeps them fresher longer. It made me smile to find the teeny tiny feather on top of this egg!

The other day I told you about my attempt to make mustard. Here is the final product. I have to say it tastes differently than what I am used to, but it is really, really good. It's kind of spicy, but in a good way.

Here is today's cooking experiment. They don't look like much, but they are really delicious. I had some sweet potatoes left over from a produce delivery and needed to use them before they went bad. So this is what I came up with.

Donald and I were watching TV not too long ago, and someone mentioned something about Guiness mustard. That intrigued me enough to search for a recipe online. I found one, and have been waiting for an opportunity to make it. I decided with a long weekend it was the perfect opportunity. Here you see the first step. Everything is mixed together, and all it needs to do now is age for a few days. After that, I'll process half of it in the food processor, and hopefully we'll have some awesome mustard to eat. Right now, it smells amazing. I never in a million years would have dreamed that mixing beer with vinegar would smell so good. I'll keep you posted on the progress. Oh, and the beautiful hydrangeas in the background came out of Dottie's yard.

Today we helped Dottie and Jon move in to a new apartment. They are right across from a little pond and this female duck was positive I was going to feed her. She was wrong.

If you're ever in Raleigh and want a really good pizza, you have to go here. We order this almost every Friday night.

Guess what I did during lunch today? (I'll give you a hint, my hair is a significantly shorter.) it had gotten so long that all I could do was wear it in a ponytail. I decided this morning that it was time. So far I'm pleased.

Third graders had a scientist come to visit today. He talked to them about the systems of the body; neurological, skeletal, and some other things. He also brought real specimens for them to observe, including sheep and cow hearts and sheep eyes. While some of the kids were completely grossed out by it, this girl was not. Every picture that she is in looks like this. She loved it. I wonder if she'll grow up to be a scientist one day?

Ariana volunteered to cook for Meatless Monday tonight. She made the best white pizza I've ever had! We'll definitely make this again!

Ah, Sunday morning. Fresh blueberry muffins, coffee, and the newspaper. I can't think of a better way to spend the morning.

I truly love our backyard. Unfortunately, I haven't had much time this year to enjoy it between being super busy at work and weekend travel. This weekend, however, we are home. This afternoon, while waiting on Donald to return from his business travels, I spent some time on the deck just to try and catch a picture of the hummingbirds. They returned several weeks ago, but this is the first chance I've had to wait on them.

I was excited to find a tomato in my produce delivery box this week! I think I'll let it ripen up just a bit more before we eat it.

Remember when I said we thought the hawks had fledged? I was wrong. This afternoon, I kept hearing one of the parents calling loudly so I went to check. I was delighted to see the babies! It looks like there are 3 total.

Way back when Dottie was a freshman in college, she talked about how bad the food was in the cafeteria. She called the eggs "feggs", short for fake eggs. Somehow that stuck and now, whenever it fits we use that naming scheme. Here I present "foreos". We got these at Aldi, and actually like them better than the real ones.

It's Mother's Day! Donald and I I were lucky enough to spend the day with my mother and we took her to a Concord institution for lunch, the Hotel Concord! Back in the day, if you wanted to be seen, you went to the hotel for lunch on Sunday after church. Like everything else, time goes by and things change. The hotel now only serves on holidays and special occasions. We had my high school prom here, and I've been to a wedding reception here as well. It was nice to eat there again today.

My latest plant project. I took a clipping from one of my mint plants and submerged it in water. You can't see in this picture, but roots are growing and it is just about ready to be planted.

It's been a while since I've given you a backyard update, so I thought it may be the perfect opportunity for a panoramic view. We think the hawks have fledged, I've got my tomatoes planted, Donald is still working outside as much as he can, and it's nice to have Ariana's car here in our driveway.

It never gets old. Every year when my tomato plants get their first blossom, I get ridiculously excited. I just can't wait for those homegrown tomatoes!
