I actually baked a cake over the weekend. And not just any cake, this is a blackberry wine cake. It's not bad. I think Liz stated the flavor best, it kind of tastes like a cobbler.

What you see here is the ultimate in laziness, and I'm talking about my own laziness. If you look carefully, you'll see that the computer on the left looks a little like the computer on the right. I've been setting up the machine on the left to go into a classroom, and just when I think it's ready, more updates pop up that need to be installed. Rather than move my chair over the two feet to do this, I decided to remote in and complete the install. Isn't technology grand?

Some days I feel like I just can't win. I try so hard to bring these teachers into the 21st century, and they still want to use old technology like the overhead projector. What makes this so frustrating is the fully interactive cart right behind it. The document camera would do exactly the same job as the overhead.

Donald and I took a trip to the Farmer's Market this morning, with the sole purpose of buying tomatoes. Several farmers had rows and rows of peppers, in all shapes, sizes and colors.

Liz came home for the weekend and brought Tommy back with her. It didn't take long for him to find a box to sit in.

We're bracing for Irene. The outer bands reached Raleigh this afternoon. Unfortunately, I had to stop at the grocery store, along with everyone else in town. These clouds were over the parking lot.

It seems like everywhere I look, mushrooms are popping up everywhere. This one happens to be in our backyard.

Some of you remember the one year I taught in Wake County after Donald and I got married. And you may also remember how perfectly miserable I was for the entire school year. However, one good thing did come out of that year: a recipe for chicken enchiladas. The PTA had given us a luncheon, and one of my parents made these and gave me the recipe. The original recipe has about a gazillion ingredients, including cooking your own chicken. I have perfected the recipe to include rotisserie chicken from Harris Teeter. All you do is mix the chicken with sour cream, green onions, green chilies, fresh cilantro, cheese, and anything else you want. You roll it in flour tortillas, cover it with enchilada sauce and more cheese, then bake it. These freeze really well, and tonight we just pulled some out of the freezer and baked. They are quite yummy.

I stopped at the grocery store on the way home today and noticed this sign, proudly proclaiming you will save 1 cent when you purchase this product. What will we do with the savings?

You may have seen this before, and if so, I apologize for the repeat. After so many years of a photo a day, ideas are slow in coming. Anyway, I've always wanted a bird bath. A couple of years ago, I decided I could make my own, so here is my creation, an inverted flower pot. I've never seen any birds in it until this weekend. I started to notice a lot of bird activity in the backyard, so I paid attention and little birds were splashing around, then preening themselves on the deck posts. So much fun to watch!

Liz left to go back to school today, and took Tommy with her. She'll be back next weekend to get the rest of her things, and Tangles. In the meantime, Tangles is an only cat for a whole week. Do you think she minds?

Donald and I took a trip to see Dottie and Jon today. We spent yesterday afternoon cooking and packaged them so ready-to-heat meals to make their life a little easier after the baby comes. Jon took us on post at Ft. Bragg and showed us where the hospital is so we'll know when the time comes. He also gave us a mini-tour of it, and we went to the PX and Commissary. I felt like a tourist.
They've both been working on the baby's room. It's still in progress, but is almost ready for baby Patrick!

Today was my last day for summer hours. I've noticed the sun is coming up later in the mornings, and that means I got to see a beautiful sunrise on my way to work. This picture doesn't do it justice because the sun was a big, orange ball.

Here is a description of my day: teachers came back, worked at two schools, met with school nurses, central office got put on lock down because of an escaped convict, came home, sat on deck, dog looked pitiful.

Donald has a way with animals. He gave Thug a bath today, which means a good brushing afterward. Tommy, who has never enjoyed a brushing, has discovered he likes Donald's way of doing it. He's patiently waiting his turn.

We did a little furniture re-arranging in our den today. I had some end tables that came from my grandmother, and we decided they would work in that room. It's kind of nice to have something she owned near me now while I'm home.

September 4, 2010 at 11:55 pm. This was the moment Dottie proclaimed that she and Jon were going to wait at least 10 years before having children, they were having too much fun being young adults and newly married. Jon documented this statement above their door. Surprises happen, the baby is due September 7, 2011. Wouldn't it be funny if the baby decides to come on the 4th?
For the record, it's a very happy and welcome surprise.

About six months ago, Donald and I noticed they were starting to do some construction work just up from where we live. We were worried that they were building another neighborhood, which would only add to the traffic. A few weeks ago, there was an article in the paper about the area. The original land owner left it in her will to the City of Raleigh to be used as a nature conservation park. The ribbon cutting ceremony was yesterday, so we drove down in there today. We're going back when we have time to hike the trails.

"When this old world starts getting me down, and people are just too much for me to face. I climb way up to the top of the stair, and all my cares just drift right into space. On the roof it's peaceful as can be, and there the world below can't bother me."
I thought the lyrics to "On The Roof" would be appropriate for this photo today. I found some hidden stairs at the new high school and was delighted to see I could climb out on the roof. It really was peaceful up there, and you get a birds eye view.

Liz has taken up making jewelry, specifically chain mail. She's actually sold a couple of pieces, earrings, bracelets and a necklace. It amazes how artistic she is, and how she can see things in her mind and actually create them.

Donald has been riding his bike for exercise lately. I've been really proud of him because he goes anywhere from 7-15 miles three times a week. When he rode on Saturday, he got a tiny sliver of glass in his tire, enough to make it go flat. He has taken that opportunity to do a thorough cleaning of the wheels.
